Colour and Pattern
A creative challenge by Elaine Kazimierczuk
The Challenge
This challenge invites you to explore the joy of colour and pattern. Look around you and notice the colours and patterns in nature, in your home, in fabrics, and in everyday objects. Then create your own bold, expressive artwork inspired by what you see.
Art does not have to look like something real. Sometimes the most exciting artwork is made from shapes, colours, and patterns that simply make us feel happy when we look at them.
Finding Inspiration
Before you start creating, take some time to really look at the world around you. Here are some places to find colour and pattern inspiration:
- Flowers, leaves, and plants in a garden or park
- The sky at different times of day
- Patterns on fabrics, cushions, or curtains
- Tiles, bricks, or paving stones
- Food! Fruits and vegetables have amazing colours
- Animal markings like spots, stripes, and feathers
- Reflections in water or windows
Create Your Artwork
Now it is time to create! There are many ways to approach this challenge:
- Colour study: Choose three or four colours that you love together. Create an artwork using only these colours.
- Pattern exploration: Pick a simple shape like a circle, triangle, or square. Repeat it across your paper in different sizes to create a pattern.
- Nature inspired: Look closely at something from nature. Paint or draw the colours and patterns you see, but make them bigger and bolder.
- Abstract expression: Let your feelings guide your brush or pencil. Use colour to express how you feel today.
Colour Ideas
Here are some colour combinations you might enjoy:
Tips for Bold Art
- Do not be afraid to use bright, strong colours
- Let colours overlap and mix on your paper
- Fill your whole page. Empty space is fine, but bold art often fills the frame
- If you make a "mistake," keep going! Sometimes mistakes lead to the best discoveries
- Step back and look at your work from a distance. How does it make you feel?
